Highways
Interstate 77 passes through the middle of Washington County, connecting Cleveland to the north with Columbia, South Carolina, to the south.
State Route 7 follows the Ohio River and connects New Matamoras, Newport, Marietta, Belpre, and Little Hocking. The Ohio Department of Transportation will spend over $20 million to make Route 7 a five-lane controlled access corridor east of Marietta to accommodate the over 30,000 vehicles that travel that road daily. Route 7 from Marietta to Belpre and Little Hocking is already a four-lane divided highway.
U.S. Route 50 forms a junction with State Routes 32 and 7 providing a four-lane divided highway route that extends to Washington, D.C., in the east and Sacramento, California, in the west.
Corridor D is the approximately $300-million dollar U.S. Route 50 bypass around Parkersburg. This project is under construction and will be a revolutionary transportation enhancement for the entire Mid-Ohio Valley. U.S. 50 will cross the Ohio River near Belpre, Ohio, where U.S. Route 50 will interchange with State Route 7/State Route 32. The project is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2007.
Other significant State Highways of commerce include:
- Route 60 following the Muskingum River between Marietta and Zanesville.
- Route 339 linking Belpre in the south to Beverly and Waterford in the northwest part of Washington County.
- Route 550 links Marietta with Barlow, Vincent and Athens.
- Route 26 provides access to the oil, gas and timber rich areas of northeast Washington County.
- Route 821 links State Route 60 near Marietta with the communities of Lower Salem, Whipple and Macksburg.
